1982 Airstream Classic 280 Maintenance and Upgrades

 

Mechanical:

Dealer installed new Chevrolet 454 Engine; presently has approx 44,000 miles on it.  

Highly maintained with frequent oil changes, oil (wix brand filters) and fuel filters, and coolant changes.

Regular chassis lubrication.

Aluminum billet heat protected starter with sealed solenoid - installed. Starter is also wrapped in a thermal insulated blanket.

Wiring to starter is thermal wrapped also.

Recent higher output alternator 135 amps installed.

High power Battery Isolator 200 amps installed to match alternator.

Accel High Heat spark plug wires.

Carburetor cleaned and adjusted all fuel filters renewed.

Cooling system maintained with added water-wetting agent. Runs consistent 160 to180 degress.

Air filter replaced. “Tornado Air manager” installed over carb benefits fuel mileage and low end power.

PCV valve replaced.

Bilstein front shocks and steering stabilizer shock installed.

Monroe rear shocks installed.

Front and rear airbags (air ride suspension) fully functional with manual fill Schrader valves.

Rides very smoothly on air ride.

Exhaust mufflers and pipes replaced.

Chromed wheel sims on all outer wheels.

Tires have good tread and life left. Full covered spare with the coveted & "hard to replace"Airstream hard cover.

 

Generator: ONAN model.

Maintained regularly oil changed. New spark plugs and filters. Run regularly as per ONAN specs. 4K model with approx 500 total hours on it.

 

Coach Living area:

Newer Dometic refrigerator. Three way gas, dc , ac.

Flooring – underlayer cleaned & sealed and new cork flooring installed in living room area.

Fold out couch sleeps 1 - 2.

Twin beds in bedroom area with privacy door.

Cedar lined closets in bedroom. Full bathroom closet, medicine cabinet and storage areas.

Overhead aircraft style storage bins throughout.

Under bed storage areas.

Outside underneath storage lockers.

 

Berber carpet installed in bedroom and front driver/pass area. Rubberized underlayment used.

 

Vinyl tile on bathroom floor.

Newer Thetford toilet installed.

Shower and sink area in excellent condition.

Water heater has updated board. Heat quickly and retains water temp.

LP Furnace - maintained, burner cleaned .

Insulation for sound and heat under front carpet ( rubberized ) in dog house area and seating area.

Fold out dining table replaced; oak with brass fittings, custom made.

Additional original pedestal tables fit into floor 'plugs' (2).

All upholstery and trim redone by the 'Mad Stitcher'- high quality automotice grade fabrics used.

Dash is like new- no cracks.

          Newer Sony stereo installed.

Oak cabinets re-stained and polysealed.

Interior walls are aluminum lined.

Shower has brass fittings- repaced plastic.

 

Roof vents re-weather stripped.

Front driver and passenger window channel seals replaced (updated to newer material).

Front window latches replaced.

Exterior striping redone with custom automotive quality striping: in both upper and beltline stripe area.

Newer “CareFree” Fiesta awning . Easy to unroll for one person unlike the zip dee. 

Twin fans side mounted in driver/pass area.

Roof A/C maintained. Has a functional heatstrip.

Univolt- charger converter works as new.

Sewage gray and black tank valves replaced to newer Thetford style. Hose is standard sized now.

Grey and black water holding tanks have been replaced.

City water input line replaced and updated.

Tow hitch with updated style wire connector.

Inside and outside lighting is fully functional.

Side driver and pass. mirrors had glass - reglazed.

 Front and side "weep hole" covers renewed.

 


 


 

 

 

This coach has been a joy to own, and operate, and is reluctantly offered for sale, hopefully to someone who will appreciate it and keep this classic alive.

Coaches like this are rare and draw much admiration in the road. 

It has been regularly used and never let us down!

It has been photo featured in 'Airstream Life' magazine article - Winter 2005.

It was also on the Airstream Company screen saver...the only motorhome shown there.
